“Why gnomes?” people ask. On a superficial level, gnomes are cute and funny. Viewers seem amused by seeing them constructed of improbable materials or placed in ridiculous situations.
However, beyond simple entertainment value, the gnomes have an additional purpose. I find that gnomes are an effective visual metaphor for disenfranchised people groups – the “others” among us.
Although gnomes can be appealing, we usually also find them slightly creepy. We tend to trivialize or demonize them and certainly don’t think of them as admirable characters who are adult in nature or hold any real power. – Janet Morrow
