Moncrief Cancer Institute, in conjunction with the Texas Christian University (TCU) School of Art, presents Untold Stories, featuring new landscape works by Kerri S. Menchaca which explore our relationship to the intense and unforgiving Texas landscape. Through sensitively rendered graphite drawings and luminous oil paintings, Menchaca invites viewers to witness quiet moments when adventuring on the public lands of Texas. For this exhibition, the artist pairs QR codes containing audio narration of legends and oral histories with the artworks. The audio narrations not only allow Menchaca to continue the oral traditional of both familiar and obscure legends, but she also crafts her own stories based on site-specific adventures and memories.
Viewers are provided with a free brochure, which includes a catalog of works included in the exhibition, QR codes that link to audio narration, and a short essay by first year MA Art History Student Anna Thornton. The combination of audio narration and richly detailed landscape offers ample opportunity for Moncrief patients and visitors to feel the spirit of adventure themselves.
Artist Kerri S. Menchaca received her BFA in painting and BA in Art History from the University of Texas. She lives in Fort Worth and is a researcher in the Special Collections Department of the Mary Couts Burnett Library at Texas Christian University.
Contributor Anna Thornton currently resides in Fort Worth where she is pursuing her MA in Art History from Texas Christian University. She received her BA in Visual Art and English from Belhaven University, Mississippi. Eventually, she hopes to combine her passions for the creative process and art history by working as a painting conservator.
Moncrief Cancer Institute provides Tarrant County and surrounding communities with the foremost science, resources, and programs to reduce the threat and impact of cancer. The partnership between Moncrief Cancer Institute and the TCU School of Art celebrates the vital relationship between art and medicine and how art positively impacts the patient experience. TCU graduate students are selected to participate as guest curators and then mentored through the exhibition-making process by staff of The Art Galleries at TCU.
