ADULT ART WORKSHOP: Leather Tooling 101

Oil and Cotton Creative Exchange

Leather Tooling 101
Sunday, May 29, 3-6pm
Location: 2313 Beatrice St, Dallas, TX 75208
Instructor: Scott Michael Horn
# of students: 6-20

A fast-paced jaunt through the basics of turning a simple piece of cowhide into a wearable piece of art. Each student will walk away having created something unique with their own hands - wrist cuffs, kerchief slides, key fobs, or bookmarks.

Scott’s passion for honoring the craft of leatherwork translates into a high-energy teaching style, mixing technique demos with anecdotes about the history, production, and process of crafting saddle leather. After a brief overview the students are set free to start hammering and exploring the tools. The class is centered on creative expression, teaching not just the craft skills but the concepts of how to design your own unique patterns. The artist shares his large personal collection of leather stamp tools with the class so there is endless variety, and there are lots of sample patterns to help kick-start the creative process. Soon everyone is focused in, sharing ideas, laughing or groaning, all while a chorus of hammering fills the room. In the midst of the hammering people find focus, calm, and a wonderful release for stress and tension. Come forget your cares for an afternoon, make a joyful noise and craft a piece of wearable art that can last a lifetime. Hammer it out y'all!
