Oak Cliff Cultural Center

Get a taste of Puerto Rico with this one of a kind experience in Oak Cliff!

Join us for a night filled Puerto Rican folklore, dance, music, and more.  Participants will be exposed to the sounds of folk storytelling through Plena music and sights of Taino-Inspired art and symbols. Participants will have the opportunity to experience, through smell and taste, a culinary sampling of traditional flavor profiles.

Historical aspects of Puerto Rico through the discussion of three Puerto Rico rum producers and the Commonwealth’s legislative framework enacted to set rum quality standards; and to protect its claim of being the “Rum Capital of the World.” The lecture will include a combination of audiovisual supporting elements (e.g. archive photos, news articles, music, video, and visual aids) and costumes. Lecture will be presented by Mr. Jose Nelson Cruhigger, who has been an avid cultural advocate and supporter of the Puerto Rican diaspora in North Texas for over 12 years. Former member of
the Mayaguez Municipal Folkloric Dance Group, and a non-traditional, self-taught, emerging visual artist.

The night will end with a performance by a Plena/Bomba ensemble.
