Alfred Lockwood at the Murchison Performing Arts Center

University of North Texas - Murchison Performing Arts Center

Each semester, the Arts Council collaborates with the University of North Texas' College of Music and the Murchison Performing Arts Center to showcase and celebrate North Texas artists by exhibiting their works in the vast lobby leading to Margot & Bill Winspear Hall and the Lyric Theater at the Murchison Performing Arts Center. Our featured artist for Spring 2022 is local wildlife and nature photographer Alfred Lockwood. Twelve of Lockwood's photo on metal prints featuring bald eagles, the UNT mascot, are on display in the Murchison Performing Arts Center Lobby and online at dentonarts.com/lockwood, through May 2022.

From the artist: "Birds of prey have provided inspiration to people for centuries and arguably, the Bald Eagle is perched at the top of the raptor group.  Once in danger of extinction due to habitat destruction, illegal shooting, and food contamination from the use of DDT in pesticides, the Bald Eagle is one of the great conversation comeback stories thanks to the Endangered Species Act, the banning of DDT and conservation actions taken by multiple public and private groups.  Populations continue to flourish and grow from Alaska, through Canada and the contiguous United States, and into Mexico.  My goal was to photograph the Bald Eagle to trumpet the combination of its power, grace and majesty."

A portion of all proceeds benefit the Denton Greater Arts Council, and the artist is donating 100% of the profits from this exhibit to benefit UNT’s College of Visual Arts and Design through an endowment at the UNT Foundation funding scholarships photography students.
