Metamorphosis – Charles Patrick & Paul Rousso

Laura Rathe Fine Art

Dallas Design District gallery, Laura Rathe Fine Art, announces Metamorphosis, a two-person show featuring new works by Charles Patrick and Paul Rousso. LRFA will be hosting an opening reception on Saturday, January 8th, from 5-8pm.

Both Charles Patrick and Paul Rousso are masters of transforming 2-D materials into three-dimensional works of art. They each source vintage materials such as newspapers, magazines, comics, currency, maps, flags, and other ephemera. Living in a world between the paper and digital ages, both artists give new life to these materials through their complex and layered processes; and even incorporate the butterfly as a symbol of this rebirth.

By scanning and sculpting, cutting and shaping, and firing and pinning, both artists speak to the conversion of materials and construction of a new kind of Metamorphosis.

Metamorphosis will be on display through February 12th, 2022.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

CHARLES PATRICK

With a background in vintage poster restoration, illustration, and printmaking, Charles Patrick combines his love of paper, art history, and design to create works that are both strikingly beautiful and poignantly thought-provoking. These works conjure feelings of nostalgia for the tactility of paper, created from vintage comic books, children’s books, currency, maps, and other ephemera. This stands in jarring contrast to the clean, pixelated designs that the butterflies form which exchange individual emotion for the universal immediacy of today’s contemporary visual language. Charles Patrick’s works are included in numerous private and corporate collections worldwide.

PAUL ROUSSO

North Carolina artist, Paul Rousso, uses heat infusion on polystyrene to create hyper-realistic, hyper-sized, sculptures of everyday print objects. Advances in technology have enabled him to delve into the heat-tempered sculpting of the world’s ephemera in surprising ways. Through exaggerations of size, Rousso places familiar items as a crumpled-up ten-dollar bill or newspaper on the same relative plane as the viewer. Rousso’s art speaks to the transformation of physical objects and the effect of that on the viewer. He points out that, “all this stuff is going away,” and as the ink and paper era is drawing to a close, Rousso wants you to take a good long look. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, New Orleans, Houston, Miami, and Monaco.
