kNOwBOX dance Film Festival 2021: Dancing Outside the Box

Oak Cliff Cultural Center

The Dallas-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts service organization, kNOwBOX dance (NB), presents the third annual kNOwBOX dance Film Festival (NBFF) December 11th-19th with events in Dallas, Texas, USA, in Seoul, Korea, and Online.

OFFICIAL SELECTION

The official kNOwBOX dance Film Festival 2021 selection features 24 dance films of both national and international filmmakers from Australia, Bulgaria, France, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, Norway, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Films are experimental, multicultural, multigenre, and technological representations of dance. The films take the kNOwBOX dance tagline “say NO to the BOX” to unexpected places and offer stunning landscapes, emotional narratives, and thought-evoking reflections that invite the viewers familiar and new to dance and film to think outside of the box.

Program A features ten dance films that explore an innovative approach to framing striking visual landscapes, history and tradition, and queerness among other current issues. Films include; ‘Moving Barcelona’ a story through dance about the Catalonian capital narrated by celebrated actor Pep Munné; a queer, speculative, documentary love letter to Russian constructivist women ‘I want to make a film about women’ by Karen Pearlman (author and Award winning director); and ‘Listening Tree’, a film that affirms our relationality with the life-forces of our world, by Darren Johnson featuring solo performance by Ananya Chatterjea (Guggenheim Choreography Fellow) among others.

Program B features eight dance films that defy rules and possibilities and push the envelope for dance-related films in a bold evocative way by offering representations of current social and political happenings, diverse communities, and abstract art. Films include; MacArthur Award winning performing artist Eiko Otake in ‘Rock is Broken’ as she evokes the shock, despair and forced acceptance of loss against the real life dystopian landscape of the burnt ruins of the Dorris Duke Theater at Jacob's Pillow, ‘The Kitchen’ by Vishwakiran Nambi that explores traditional roles assigned to women in a patriarchal society in South Indian eighties-style kitchen, and a glimpse into everyday life in Rwanda, documenting the young dancers’ passion and commitment to dance in ‘Why I Dance’ by Sånafest just to name a few.

Program C features five films that will screen on alternative platforms. Films negotiate time, identity, and ritual in intimate and meaningful ways. Films include; ‘Buoyancy’ a serene and surreal journey through Mannheim’s art nouveau Herschelbad by Jessica Liu among others.

DESCRIPTIONS OF LIVE AND VIRTUAL EVENTS

The NBFF 2021 premier offers various events for participants to engage with international art via dance and film in exciting, entertaining, challenging, and stimulating ways such as the following:

DALLAS, TEXAS, USA

Kids Screening + Creative Movement Workshop

For the young screen lovers and the world's future makers, this 30-minute curated dance film selection is programmed for family-friendly entertainment followed by a 30-minute creative movement workshop that provides a joyful way for children to explore movement.

The Local Texas Feature Film will screen at the Dallas Public Library. ‘HaMapah/The Map Dance on-Film' by Fort Worth, TX-based arts and service organization DNAWORKS, chronicles dancer and choreographer Adam W. McKinney’s return to his ancestral homelands—Benin, Poland, Montana, Arkansas, Missouri, and Wisconsin—to trace the intersections of his African American, Native American, and Jewish heritages; and investigate the healing of transgenerational traumas.

Workshops

Two free 50-minutes workshops (MAKE and SHARE) at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center are facilitated by local guest artists selected by kNOwBOX dance based on contributions to the field of dance film.

MAKE is hosted by Vietnamese-American Dance Artist and Founder/Artistic Director of TranScend Motion, Sarah Tran. TranScend Motion (TM) is a creative company that converges movement making across various art implements to produce original dance works. This 50-minute workshop invites anyone interested in dance movement and filmmaking at all levels to explore creative relationships in dance and film with body movement, camera movement, cinematography, lighting, and editing. This workshop also encourages experimentation in creating short dance films for social media platforms by using a smartphone or video camera.

SHARE is hosted by Black Visual Artist and TikTok star Asiyah Martin. Asiyah is a videographer and director who works with local artists of all kinds, from make-up professionals to dancers, and helps their visions come to life through video production. This workshop will explore dance film (the production process and editing process) and motivate, inspire, and uplift participants.

Networking Reception

kNOwBOX dance hosts a one-hour NBFF Networking Reception in the lobby of the Texas Theatre—with live music sets by local musicians (Carleigh Reese of HONIN music, and Pepe Valdez and Mariana Grahl of El Chanclazo), art booths displays (locally made jewelry and art available for purchase), and complimentary hors d'oeuvres—blending communities of dancers, filmmakers, musicians, among those seeking an opportunity to mingle and talk about dance and film.

Screening Programs A, B, and C

Live screenings at The Dallas Public Library, Texas Theatre, and Bishop Arts Theatre Center feature local, national, and international dance-related films selected by the NBFF 2021 Jury based on FilmFreeway submissions.
