Organized by the Tyler Museum of Art, in partnership with the Texas Fashion Collection, part of the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design, The Black Dress celebrates the impact of the little black dress on fashion and social gatherings since its popularization by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel in the 1920s. The featured artifacts, all drawn from the Texas Fashion Collection, spotlight a variety of renowned designers’ takes on the iconic garment over the past century, as well as complementary accessories including handbags, hats, and shoes.
Placing the garments and accessories into contemporary societal context, the pieces are paired with Forth Worth artist Nancy Lamb’s Social Spaces paintings. Capturing the glitz and glam of various social settings, Lamb highlights partygoers’ candid expressions and ensemble details through her unique perspective.
This exhibition is co-curated by Annette Becker, Texas Fashion Collection Director, and Caleb Bell, Tyler Museum of Art Curator.
