Das Blümelein Project (DB Project) is a collaborative musical organization that breaks the barriers of accessibility, foreign language, elitism, and cultural misrepresentation associated with opera and classical music in order to highlight the beauty of this valued repertoire.
This performance features collaborations with local artists, including Temi and Afritina Coker of Coker Studio, whose work has been featured on The Academy Awards and HBO; Tracie Hunter, an Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker; and incredibly talented musicians, dancers, and directors. DB Project’s A Lily Among Thorns disrupts the form of classical music and uses classical themes to elaborate on and enforce modern ideas and advancements.
Consisting of three vignettes that focus on female empowerment and highlight the universality of women throughout history, this show will feature a virtual premiere of Libby Larsen’s Try Me, Good King, a chamber orchestration of Robert Schumann’s Frauenlieben und Leben, and a world premiere of A Lily Among Thorns, an operatic combination and reordering of John La Montaine’s song cycles Songs of the Rose of Sharon and Fragments from the Song of Songs.
