Visual Culture: REPRESENT! Series

Brought to you by Texas Woman’s University’s Visual Art Department and

the MA in Art (Concentration in Art History & Visual Culture) Program

Texas Woman’s University’s Visual Art Department is excited to announce its inaugural Visual Culture: REPRESENT! Series juried exhibition, Intersections.  This open call for all media Texas artists compliments the scholarship and learning opportunities of our MA in Art History & Visual Culture.

The exhibition focuses on the concept of “intersections” including

  • Contradiction or conflict
  • Internal or external meeting points
  • Unexpected clashes or chance encounters
  • Past and present
  • Life events or human interactions
  • Abstract and/or concrete
  • Intersectionality

The exhibition will be juried by John Spriggins, the Manager of the South Dallas Cultural Center.  Mr. Spriggins has experience as an Interim Curator for the African American Museum, Gallery Director for Richland College (Dallas County Community College District), and an Art and Humanities professor for the Tarrant County and Dallas County Community College Districts.

Artists may submit a maximum of three works and there is no submission fee.  Submissions will be accepted Monday, July 26 through Friday, August 27 at midnight (CT). Submit here: https://forms.gle/1Cj1tfB36vfbeCKf9

The exhibition will be hosted at TWU’s East and West Galleries and will be on exhibit from Monday, October 4 - Friday, November 5.

Series statement

Visual culture opens up the opportunity to explore work that moves within and beyond the traditional boundaries of art history to construct a broader sense of how imagery communicates sociocultural ideas. This series draws on the inclusivity of visual culture to engage with the concept of representation within social justice contexts.

Department statement

This series’ mission puts into practice the MA in Art (Concentration in Art History & Visual Culture) program’s and the Visual Arts department’s commitment to interdisciplinarity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice advocacy. In emphasizing the need to REPRESENT, the series reflects the program’s enthusiasm for the role of visual art in activism and its ability to be a platform for underrepresented voices.  In our student-centered department, we are committed to engaging with the community and fostering transformational dialogues through visual art.
