Juneteenth Celebration

Hopewell-Rosenwald School

With a grant from the National Parks Service, the Hopewell Rosenwald School of Cedar Creek has been restored and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in July 2015. The Juneteenth celebration will include an open house/tour of the historic school. There will be BBQ, refreshments, games for the entire family and former students are invited to share their oral history.

Rosenwald Schools

Booker T. Washington of the Tuskegee Institute and Julius Rosenwald, philanthropist and president of Sears Roebuck, built state-of-the art schools for African-American children across the South. The effort has been called the most important initiative to advance black education in the early 20th century. The Hopewell Rosenwald School-Cedar Creek is one of the more than 5000 built for African American students in the early 1920s.
