A powerful look at the Tulsa Race Massacre, one of the worst incidents of racial violence in our nation's history. The book traces the history of Black people in Tulsa's Greenwood district and chronicles the devastation that occurred in 1921 when a white mob attacked the Black community. News of what happened was largely suppressed, and no official investigation occurred for seventy-five years. This picture book sensitively introduces young readers to this tragedy and concludes with a call for a better future.
Carole Boston Weatherford, New York Times bestselling author and Newbery Medal winning author, will discuss her journey as a children’s author of over 40 titles, the history of the Tulsa Massacre and why her book Unspeakable is so important in this moment. Includes a read aloud by Ms. Weatherford of her latest work. By registering, you have a chance to win a copy of Ms. Weatherford’s recent book. Winners will be randomly selected from the pool of attendees. No purchase is required. Q&A with the author will follow the presentation.
