WRR Radio is 100

In 1921, WRR Radio made history by becoming the first licensed radio station in Texas.  Celebrate WRR’s centennial birthday with their Director of Marketing and Promotions Amy Bishop and City of Dallas archivist John Slate at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22 at a free live virtual event at   https://allentx.swagit.com/live/  Submit questions until 8:30 p.m. that evening through [email protected]  WRR 101.1 FM and Dallas Municipal Archives are co-hosts for this special event.

From its origins in public safety as fire and police dispatch, to its many decades of music programming as an AM station, and now the premier classical FM station for North Texas, WRR has been a valued community partner.

View images from ten decades of service and hear fascinating stories of WRR’s vast contributions to North Texas’s cultural landscape.   Remember Jim Lowe and the Kat’s Karavan that featured rhythm-and-blues artists? Or did you listen John Peel who later became a famed British disc jockey?

Formerly the arts and culture beat reporter for Houston’s NPR affiliate, Amy Bishop is an award-winning journalist. Her stories could often be heard statewide and nationally on Texas Standard and NPR’s Here & Now.

John Slate has been responsible for historic city government records in the Dallas Municipal Archives since 2000. A Fellow of the Society of American Archivists, John is also a member of the Academy of Certified Archivists.
