Celebrating Juneteenth
Black composers of early music are rare, France’s Joseph Bologna, Chevalier de St. Georges being the only one celebrated in history. Bologna is represented on our program with his elegant ’String quartet No 1’. We present more recent African American classical composers in celebration of the Texas roots of Juneteenth, with Jessie Montgomery’s “Strum”, Grant Still’s 'Danzas de Panama', and the 19th C Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s 'Four Noveletten’.
