FWCAC (Fort Worth Community Arts Center) will be presenting
MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE, an exhibition by Dallas based artist Ryan Oswald.
MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE explores a multifaceted and eccentric body of work including large scale oil paintings, an ambitious sculpture installation, and works on paper.
In this exhibition Ryan draws inspiration from early advertising and Television technology itself (signal, color, sound, broadcasting, graphic design, ect.) as well as the RCA company and its story of bringing Television into the home; using these influences to develop a visual language unique to his art practice.
Originating from a long-time interest in media theory concepts that put forth the following:
A “message” is the “change of scale or pace or pattern that a new invention or innovation introduces into human affairs. People tend to focus on the obvious, which is the content, to provide us valuable information, but in the process, we largely miss the structural changes in society that are introduced subtly over long periods of time.” -Marshall McCluhan
These concepts were a jumping off point to explore and experiment artistically within a whole range of mediums and materials; creating a visual style, language and ultimately… experience.
Ryan Oswald works in a range of traditional art mediums and new technologies from his Dallas Design District studio. His background in the fine arts ranges from painting, sculpture, and printmaking while also working with new technologies like 3D modeling & Virtual Environments. Ryan’s graphic design and fine arts work has been published in several publications and books and exhibited nationally and internationally. Ryan holds an MFA in Graphic Design from Louisiana Tech University and a BA in Visual Communications from Centenary College of Louisiana.
