Courage is a universal human trait. “Heroism” is an ethical concept that varies from culture to culture and, within the same culture, over time. This lecture will explore the origin, history and nature of a Heroic Ideal that originated in Greek Antiquity and its surprising impact on American culture at multiple levels - from popular culture to the COVID Pandemic, from business to national and international politics. Put another way, what do Achilles, Bobby Fischer, Batman and former president Donald Trump have in common?
