Level Four Improv: Creating Characters in the Moment - Virtual Event

Stomping Ground Comedy Theater

As the nature of improvisation is creation on-the-fly, students will explore a number of techniques and exercises they can use towards the aspirational goal of character agility: being able to create various living-and-breathing characters - imbued with emotion, perspective, attitude, and physicality - onstage at a moment’s notice depending on what the scene and one’s scene partners need to move the narrative forward.  Building on the emotional content work of the previous level, students will work to create characters with driving passions and objectives and learn to react honestly from these strong character choices.  This class includes a student showcase.  The prerequisites for this class are Levels One, Two, and Three at Stomping Ground or completion of another comparable improv training program.

This course will focus on:

  • Finding Character Physicality

  • Using Personal Spacework

  • Finding Your Character’s Obsession

  • Exploration of Status and Its Impact on Interactions

  • Free Association to Make Quick-Draw Character Choices

  • Using Edits to Connect Scenes Into Larger Pieces
