Dallas Design District Gallery, Laura Rathe Fine Art, announces a duo-exhibition ‘Visual Effect’, featuring new works by Robert Mars and Stallman. LRFA will be hosting this exhibition by appointment only beginning Saturday, November 21st.
Redefining the traditional model of painting, both Robert Mars and artist duo, Stallman Studio, create an impactful experience through their unique techniques. Mars’ new abstract body of work strikes a balance between gestural brushwork and precision, while Stallman merge painting and sculpture into one. Through pattern play and vibrant colors, these artists have generated a profound visual effect that the viewer can’t help but become entranced in.
Employing concepts rooted in abstract expressionism, Robert Mars begins with multicolored paint layers of loose and dynamic brushstrokes on vintage newspaper. The choice to sometimes highlight and sometimes obliterate this record of events acts as rebellion to structure and order. The vintage newspaper is a bridge to the events of the past; anchoring the work in history. The dialogue between the layers of color and the events glimpsed through the paint sets the palette for the final composition. To apply order to the chaos, Mars precisely cuts the painted newspaper into predetermined patterns. Based on traditional quilt patterns from American history, this new series echoes the backgrounds utilized in Mars' representational body of work. As he rebuilds the composition, he keeps structure and color in mind. These new works are the result of a process of discovery and resolution.
By combining painting and sculpture, Stallman has pioneered a new technique, forming a body of work dubbed “Canvas on Edge”. In these groundbreaking works, hand cut canvas strips are meticulously twisted into dynamic compositions, each as unique as the organic cellular models that inspired them. While the duo’s craftsmanship is unmatched, their magnificent use of color is what steals the show, combining hues that flow naturally together to create incredibly soft, yet powerful gradients that undulate with the light. The cut edge of the canvas creates an elevated line drawing that never ceases or breaks, allowing the eye to explore in an almost hypnotic state. The end result is a kaleidoscope-like maze, equal part curve and color, that comes alive as the viewer ambulates.
‘Visual Effect’ will be on display through January 2nd, 2021.
