Intentionally Found Portraits - Virtual Event

Dallas Center for Photography

It takes connection. It takes confidence. It takes awareness of light. It takes vulnerability. It asks for total presence to the moment and anticipation of the next. It takes a little bit of luck, but mostly it demands complete awareness and sensitive people skills.

Creating a striking found portrait is not a happy accident.  It’s the result of careful and quick creative thinking. It can be frustrating, as many times the golden triangle of gesture, moment and light doesn’t line up.  It can also be one of the most fulfilling images a photographer can create – a genuine reflection of another person. There’s a beautiful choreography of interaction and collaboration that occurs only in found portraits, and many times these portraits tell you more about the photographer than the subject itself.

And here we get to the crux of the intentional portrait:  What are you trying to say by making this image?

Join Michael Amici and Jennifer Spelman as they share tips, stories, and insights leading to more depth, creativity and meaning in your environmental portraits. The session will touch on gear considerations and the technical fundamentals needed to more actively use available light. Techniques for approaching and interacting with new subjects will be explored. Jennifer and Michael will also talk about the “why” underneath these images; why we approach certain people versus others and what we are hoping to say about the world through images of others.
