October 16 – Indefinitely (Online Gallery)

The Art Galleries at TCU are pleased to present CREATE + PROTECT: Fashioning Safety in Times of Pandemic featuring sculptural and statement masks created by Texas Christian University students, alumni, faculty, and staff. CREATE + PROTECT: Fashioning Safety in Times of Pandemic will be on-view from October 16 – November 14, 2020 and presented in a socially-distanced style in display cases in the TCU Mary Couts Burnett Library and in theMoudy Gallery windows. Also, as guests are not permitted to campus this semester, CREATE + PROTECT will also be presented in an online gallery on The Art Galleries at TCU’s Artsy page (https://www.artsy.net/fort-worth-contemporary-arts) for the wider TCU community and our public audience to enjoy.

2020 has been a year of dramatic change, and at Texas Christian University we are beginning our Fall semester with adjustments and navigating a new normal. As we return to campus and start classes, we are acutely aware of the coronavirus pandemic and our everyday precautions to protect ourselves and our community. Masks are now part of this new normal. The facemask is a strange addition to many of our daily lives and has modified how we interact with the world and with each other. Normal social cues are more difficult to read as we can no longer welcome one another in person with a smile. This covering of the mouth and nose, while unusual, lends itself to new artistic interpretation and self-expression.

For CREATE + PROTECT: Fashioning Safety in Times of Pandemic, we are looking for original facemasks that push the physical ideas of a mask and conceptually reimagine our lives and interactions. We have all seen the typical facemask, but how can we reinterpret this piece of cloth to make a bold statement? How can we use these masks to express ourselves when we have lost facial expressions as a mode of communication? How will this new normal affect us as individuals, and our community as a whole? How will this physical object change culture and fashion? For CREATE + PROTECTwe are interested in showcasing creative ideas. These masks may not be functional or practical. We want to see the creative interpretations of our TCU community.

CREATE + PROTECT: Fashioning Safety in Times of Pandemicis juried by The Art Galleries at TCU Director, Sara-Jayne Parsons; The Art Galleries at TCU Manager, Lynné Bowman Cravens; and TCU Mary Couts Burnett Library Specialist, Kerri Menchaca.
