Nothing is Better Than Real Life: Documentary Photography Workshop

Dallas Center for Photography

Photographic moments can be found everywhere at any time, from lunch prep with four kids all under the age of 8 to an empty house with nothing but the afternoon light coming through west side of your summer cottage. With documentary photography, it’s learning to let go of all control over the environment around you and listening to your instinct and intuition to help guide you to the pictures that you want to make. Attention to details, deliberate technical decisions and, most importantly, unwavering patience are all important skills to develop when creating visual stories.

This 6-week class taught by photographer Kirsten Lewis will introduce you to documentary photography, specifically narratives found in your own home, your own back yard. Each week you will be given techniques and tools to help strengthen your ability to tell visual stories that matter to you, that mean something to you. For students with families at home, you will be encouraged to make pictures that depict your real life with them rather than a perfectly curated version of it. For students who might live alone, you will be guided to find pictures that represent who you are. This class, it’s content and instruction, will be centered around the participants and their work through assignments and critique. The goal the class is to walk away with some printable, wall-worthy pictures.
