A Historical Look at the Amish

Allen Public Library

Fleeing religious persecution in Europe, Amish communities became apparent in the United States and Canada before the American Revolution. Initially immigrating to Pennsylvania, Amish communities are now evident across the country, including Texas.   Known for simple living, plain dress, and pacifism, family time and face-to-face conversations are valued. The Amish continue to speak Pennsylvania German, also known as "Pennsylvania Dutch”.
