Arts & Letters Live Virtual Event: James McBride

See author James McBride in conversation with Leigh Haber, books editor for O, The Oprah Magazine.

Deacon King Kong is the latest Oprah's Book Club pick! In September 1969, a church deacon shuffles into the courtyard of a housing project in Brooklyn, pulls a .45 from his pocket, and in front of everybody shoots the project's drug dealer. The reasons for this burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of McBride's critically acclaimed novel. Told with wit, insight, and faith in humanity, this master storyteller reminds us that the best way to grow is to face change without fear, and that the seeds of love lie in hope and compassion.

The live virtual event takes place on Tuesday, July 21 at 7:00 p.m. A recording will be available through August 4.
