VIRTUAL ADULT WORKSHOP: May 31 Exploring Indigo + Shibori

Oil and Cotton Creative Exchange

VIRTUAL WORKSHOP:  Exploring Indigo + Shibori
Class Date: Sunday, May 31, 11-1:30pm
Registration Deadline: Friday, May 22
Location: Your home!
Instructor: Aaron Sanders Head

Participants learn the basics of setting up a plant-based indigo vat, along with various approaches to Japanese shibori resist dyeing. Aaron will focus on Itajime (shape resist) and Kumo (twist resist). Your indigo vat can be kept for quite some time and you will be able to continue dyeing beyond class.

Home Preparation:
You will need S P A C E to dye. We recommend setting up near a water source in a kitchen or on your porch near a hose. Indigo is a STRONG dye, so cover surfaces that you want to protect with plastic (cut open a trash bag and tape down). Wear an apron and shoes that can wash easily. The kit includes 2 flour sack dish towels. Participants are encouraged to provide textile goods to dye. Cellulose fibers (cotton, linen, rayon, ramie) accept color best. Vintage linens, pillowcases, dishtowels, and clothing are good choices. Pre-wash in hot water and dry before the workshop.
