Shirley Sloane Solo Show

J.N. Long Cultural Arts Complex

Shirley Sloane she says, “I am fortunate to be influenced by the creativity, imagination and enduring curiosity of my Mom and Grandmother along with their strong love of the natural world.” When she was a little kid, she loved to draw and design paper dolls and their clothes. Later she would draw and construct dioramas of Indian villages or Egyptian palaces. In school, she frequently drew ballerinas for friends. As a grown kid, she still loves to create imaginary and fanciful realities.

Shirley has an eclectic art background, at first self-taught and then taking formal classes at LSU in Baton Rouge; the Academy of Arts in San Francisco; Ohlone College and Chabot College in California. It was at Chabot where she was introduced to watercolor. She studied several years with John Komisar, learning the essential basics and techniques. She is currently studying with Ann Winchester in Cleburne, stating, “It’s a pleasure to continue to learn new and challenging lessons in Ann’s class. I am very grateful to these teachers for helping me discover the beauty and magic of painting with watercolor pigment.”

Shirley says she also inherited the “rock hound” bug and has a collection of rocks to prove it. She finds the beautiful variety and colors of natural gemstones captivating and hard to resist. Using these natural stones is one of her greatest pleasures. Shirley creates one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces which are on display alongside her watercolor scenes and colorful fantasy artwork. Shirley’s jewelry, paintings and prints are available for purchase.
