Bram Stoker's Dracula

Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture

Presented by Dr. René Prieto

What is the source of our endless fascination with creatures that both attract and repel, men and women who alternate bites with caresses? Is there something in the blood that whets our appetite for the strange combination of fear and unbridled sexuality that emanates from vampires? To answer these questions we need to turn to the prototype for ALL vampire tales: Bram Stoker’s endlessly haunting, and unusually evocative piece of storytelling. Curiously, Stoker’s Dracula has always excited more storytelling—both in embellished dramatizations for theater and cinema and in the similarly ornamented accounts of its own birth process. In this class, we will consider the vampire from both psychoanalytical and historical perspectives but always focusing on Stoker’s rich and allusive language in an attempt to reveal what makes this story so hauntingly alluring.
