DCP Speaker Series: Harvey Stein

Dallas Center for Photography

DCP and Texas Photographic Society welcome renowned street photographer, author, curator and teacher Harvey Stein to Dallas Center for Photography on Thursday, November 7.

Harvey will recount his experiences documenting Mexican village life that developed into his latest book Mexico Between Life and Death. Like his other publications, he spent many years exploring and photographing the people and surroundings of central Mexico. What resulted is a collection of photographs from 1993 to 2010 that embodies the fullness of Mexican culture.

I try to pierce the ever-present mysteries of this multifaceted land to come to some understanding of life and death through Mexico’s special alliance with these subjects, and at the same time to reveal my fascination with Mexico’s culture, people and endless incongruities. Especially captivating is to photograph at night, when the shroud of darkness enhances the mystery and ambiguity of lives lived. I have photographed primarily in small towns and villages and mostly during festivals (Day of the Dead, Semana Santa, Independence Day) that highlight the country’s unique relationship to death, myth, ritual and religion. -Harvey Stein
