Polymorpha, by Lauren Riojas-Fitzpatrick
October 7 through November 1, 2019
Art Gallery Talk and Artist’s Reception: October 24, 2019, 3 – 4:30 p.m.
The Art Galleries at Cedar Valley College present a new exhibition, Polymorpha, by Texas artist Lauren M. Riojas-Fitzpatrick. In this installation, the artist explores the idea of breaking something down – in this case, a young oak tree -- into smaller parts. Riojas-Fitzpatrick derives her imagery from natural objects such as stones and plants, using these essential objects as a source of reflection on sensory experience, identity, essence and where meaning comes from.
Polymorpha is the title of a large photographic installation, composed of 39 inkjet prints, that envisions the entire tree as a group of flat, visual notations. Additionally, in the largest part of the exhibit, Riojas-Fitzpatrick has suspended every leaf from a helium-filled Mylar balloon, in an attempt to display the singular qualities and uniqueness of each leaf. As well, she explores creating a more abstract version of leaves in handmade, cast paper.
M.F.A. graduate of UT San Antonio, Professor Riojas-Fitzpatrick now teaches at the school. Her work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Texas. A native of Austin, she now lives in New Braunfels.
Polymorpha is on view from October 7 until November 1, 2019, with a Gallery Talk and a public reception for the artist on Wednesday, October 24, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The Educational Art Gallery is located on the ground floor of the E Building on the Cedar Valley College campus, in Lancaster, Texas. The gallery is open weekdays, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.
