This summer marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. To help commemorate the influential opera composer, Opera in Cinema is presenting a three-title series of Verdi operas called “Very Verdi: A 200th Anniversary La Scala Celebration.” And with help from the Angelika Film Center, they are bringing the series to a theater near you.

For this week’s Big Deal we have two complimentary admissions for the second film in the series – Don Carlo. The opera was filmed at the  La Scala Opera House in Milan.  Don Carlo is based on the story of Carlos, Prince of Asturias, after his betrothed Elisabeth of Valois married his father, Philip II of Spain, as part of the peace treaty to end the Italian War of 1551-1559 between the Houses of Habsburg and Valois. The opera stars Ferruccio Furlanetto, Stuart Neill and Fiorenza Cedolins.

Very Verdi: Don Carlo will screen at the Angelika Film Center at Mockingbird Station and at The Shops at Legacy in Plano on Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. Winners are drawn from our pool of Art&Seek e-newsletter subscribers.
