This summer marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. To commemorate the influential opera composer, Opera in Cinema is presenting a three-title series of Verdi operas called “Very Verdi: A 200th Anniversary La Scala Celebration.” And the series is coming to the Angelika Film Center.

For this Big Deal, we have two passes, good for for two each, to the first production in the series – Aida. The opera, as was the case for each of the other two operas, was filmed at the venerable La Scala Opera House in Milan. Violeta Urmana and Roberto Alagna are the principal singers. The production was extravagantly staged by Italian film director and producer Franco Zeffirelli. With a cast of more than 300 singers, actors and dancers, this mammoth production needs to be seen on the wide screen.

Very Verdi: Aida comes to the Angelika Film Center at Mockingbird Station and at The Shops at Legacy in Plano on Aug. 11 at 2 p.m.
