Written by Dallas natives David Lozano and Raul Treviño, “Crystal City 1969” is based on the true story of Mexican-American students who walked out of school and into civil rights history.
In 1969 at Crystal City High School, Mexican-American students wanted the same things their non-Latino counterparts desired – to be cheerleaders, homecoming queen, and athletes. But they were denied these rights and were even punished for their culture. When student leaders decided these inequities had to be addressed they staged a student walk out that grew by the day. Their protest shined a national spotlight on the small farming community in south Texas. The incident not only transformed the local educational system, but inspired the students’ parents to get involve and run for political office.
