Venture Outside The House This Weekend With These Four Events

by Mia Estrada 15 May 2021 6:00 AM

After more than a year of Zoom happy hours and virtual tours, more and more people are getting vaccinated and looking to venture outside their homes. Luckily, there are new places to go and art to see in North Texas.

So get inspired and take a drive to catch outdoor LEGO sculptures or a massive community garage sale. Here’s a handy list of things to do this weekend:

LEGO “Animals” Roam Fort Worth Botanic Garden

Spread across the 110-acre Fort Worth Botanic Garden are 15 sculptures of animals made entirely out of LEGO construction toys.

The award-winning sculptures, a part of the traveling installation Nature Connects, were created by LEGO master Sean Kenney. The New York-based artist sparks a joyful sense of wonder with his models, from a butterfly on the edge of a flower to a bald eagle on the hunt. Kenney’s work shows how different parts of the environment interconnect — just like LEGO’s. Visitors will see a snapshot of some of the relationships between insects, plants and animals. The installation also features sculptures of people connected with nature, such as planting a garden.

Nature Connects is on view through Aug. 1. The show is included with the price of admission.

Spot Frida Paintings In Your Community

The love and work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo are back at the Dallas Museum of Art. And the museum is taking two of Kahlo’s works beyond its walls in the form of four pop-up installations in Dallas, Oak Cliff, Irving and Garland.

The outdoor installations feature replicas of Kahlo’s “still life” paintings, some of the lesser-known works she created in her later life. In both of the paintings, the artist emphasizes her Mexican identity by using the Mexican flag and a clay vessel of Xoloitzcuintli, an indigenous hairless dog.

The installations are free and run through June 20.

In Dallas, STEM Women Immortalized In Statues

Beginning Saturday, NorthPark Center visitors can walk through a massive exhibition showcasing 122 life-size statues of women from across the country in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers.

The installation, called #IfThenSheCan, is the first to present the largest collection of life-size statues of women in one place. It was created by Dallas-based Lyda Hill Philanthropies and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The two organizations hope to encourage young girls to pursue STEM careers and accurately portray women in STEM. The initiative also serves to showcase statues based on real women rather than allegorical figures such as the Statue of Liberty.

#IfThenSheCan runs through October.

Catch A City-Wide Garage Sale

In Plano, the Oak Point Recreation Center will continue its annual Community Garage Sale.

On Saturday, from 8 a.m to noon in the Plano Event Center parking lot, visitors can buy from about 30 residents looking to sell clothing items.

For more information, call Oak Point Recreation Center at 972-941-7540.
