Teaching Kids The Links Between Art And Love At The Nasher In Dallas

by Mia Estrada 20 Feb 2021 6:00 AM

Vincent Van Gogh once said, “There is nothing more truly artistic than to love people.” That saying echoes through the Nasher Sculpture Center’s latest edition of “Arts with Friends: Art and Love.”

Art with Friends: Art and Love. Feb.24. Virtual. Details

The virtual workshop for kids highlights the different ways love and art are linked, from using materials connected to loved ones to the process of making art.

“It’s a fun way to think about love or think about art as a verb or an action and the ways we can show care and love for each other through our actions,” said Colleen Borsh, manager of school and family programs.

Borsh will walk through works in Nasher’s collection inspired by loved ones or have a slight connection to love. One work is My Father’s Watch (For Bill Jordan) by David McManaway. The work uses Jordan’s father’s pocket watch as the centerpiece of a framed painting and encased in a shadowbox. Another piece is an expression of love entitled Eviva Amore or Long Live Love. It’s a 22,000-pound structure that spans 47 feet by Mark di Suvero.

Other connections to love include Gregory by Isamu Noguchi, Clothespin by Claes Oldenburg, Scoop-Tailed Chef by Jim Love and Torso with Buds by Jean Arp’s.

The free event, inspired by Valentine’s Day, will take place on Feb. 24. Children are asked to have on hand a few sheets of paper and something to sketch with.

The program is in partnership with the Dallas Public Library and a part of the library’s series, “Art with Friends.” Register for the event on the library’s site.
