Aurora’s “Area 3” immersive art installation opened this past weekend at a parking garage in downtown Dallas.
The exhibit takes place on the third level of Dalpark Parking Garage, where the fluorescent lights are shut off and cars are met with purple, green, and red hues of light and flowers lining the garage.
People are directed to turn off their headlights for the duration of the exhibit to allow the light from different art installations to guide the viewer through. Cars continue in a spiral until the exhibit ends on “Area 5,” and the cars are directed to the exit.
The exhibit begins with Alicia Eggert’s The Future Comes from Behind Our Backs. The phrases, “There Is No Beginning, There Is No End” are projected on curtains of streamers hanging from the ceiling.
One of the loudest/most chaotic pieces in “Area 3” is Blake Weld’s Dryer’s on the Fritz. Using censors, different sports objects bounce around washing machines as people approach the installation.
TV screens, monitors, and projections were thematic at the exhibition. “We found an opportunity to take the digital back outside,” Erica Felicella, executive producer of AURORA, said. “That’s what the experience is all about.”
The viewer is then taken through a winding path with a projected highway upon exiting, with Julie Libersat’s Golden Hour.
