Every day on Art&Seek, we’re talking to people who have tips on art in the time of social distancing. Share yours with us on Facebook, Instagram or @artandseek on Twitter. Click above to hear from artist Liz Trosper share her tip with KERA’s Nilufer Arsala.

Liz Trosper, artist and University of North Texas professor, has a massive installation currently on view at the Barry Whistler GalleryDandelion & Rose, is a 34-foot, site-specific, vinyl mural that is viewable from inside and outside the gallery.

Dandelion & Rose is on display through September 25, 2020

You can view the installation in two ways. The gallery is open for reserved appointments that can be made by emailing [email protected] or calling 214.939.0242. Or folks can view the installation from outside. Trosper recommends going during a cloudy day or around dusk for the best viewing experience.

The installation is based on the meme titled Dandelion vs. Rose, which started about 6 years ago. The mural uses the lens of plant life and cultivation to get the viewer to think about culture and politics.

“Dandelion vs Rose” meme.

“What interested me about this meme was the fine point it put on human intervention in cultivation and breeding, its powerful influence and unintended consequences,” Trosper said. “As a weed, a plant that is not valued where it is growing and is growing vigorously, dandelion comes from dent de lion, French for the lion’s tooth.”

On the gallery’s entrance window, there is a QR code that visitors can scan to pull up a digital copy of Liz’s catalog and comments.

More information on this and upcoming exhibitions can be found on Trosper’s website or on her Instagram.
