Every day on Art&Seek, we’re talking to people who have tips for staying creative and calm. Share yours with us on Facebook, Instagram or @artandseek on Twitter.
In the age of social distancing, arts organizations are quickly adapting programming to the virtual space. The same is true in the world of fashion. Abi Ferrin is a Dallas based designer and Executive Director of Love and Freedom, a fashion non-profit. They provide business and wellness classes as well as vocational training to survivors of trafficking and domestic violence. Full disclosure- she’s also my sister-in-law.
I’ve watched from the sidelines as Abi has quickly turned an IRL class to teach people how to make her “Mariposa” scarf into a virtual class.
“I find the act of making very therapeutic and holding these scarf making workshops live gives us all a chance to connect to each other and process everything that is going on.” Abi said.
The kits can be ordered online and are part of Abi’s zero waste initiative- all of the fabric comes from remnants of the garments made in her Dallas studio. She holds the DIY scarf making workshops live via Zoom call and then re-posts the videos on social media for anyone who wants to create on their own time. (Proceeds from the scarf kits go to the non-profit Love and Freedom.)
