It’s almost time to hit the books again! Get out and have some fun before summer is over.

Yep. Summer is definitely winding down. If the wee ones haven’t already started school already, they’re definitely going back next week. But don’t worry, there’s still time to get in an adventure or two before the tardy bell rings. Continuing on our things-do-before-summer-is-over theme from last week, here are 6 more ways to make this a summer to remember.

Go see the 31st Annual Highland Village Balloon Festival and Fair in Unity Park in Highland Village this weekend. If you’re not an early riser no worries. The balloons will do their thing at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. all through the weekend. The festival starts Friday night at 5 p.m. with a variety of activities including tethered balloon rides, music and a balloon glow Friday and Saturday at dusk. Don’t forget your lawn chairs, sunscreen and bug spray. The Lion’s Club will also offer free vision screening at the event.

For another up-in-the-air adventure, check out the 360-degree view at the GeO-Deck atop Reunion Tower. If you haven’t been in a while it’s a whole new experience. The all-new GeO Deck features interactive screens, high definition zoom cameras, and powerful telescopes for indoor/outdoor viewing. Two things that haven’t changed are the space-age elevator that rockets you to the top of the tower and the super-groovy revolving floor at the Cloud Nine Cafe located one floor below the GeO-Deck.

Celebrate the last gasp of summer with a good old-fashion fireworks display. Load up the kids and head to Lake Grapevine for their Friday Night Fireworks Show. The free weekly 12-minute show runs until Aug. 31 and can be viewed from the parks around Lake Grapevine.

Every kid should know how to fish. What other past time do you know of that’s so relaxing, yet is still so exciting?  Let Texas Parks and Wildlife Certified Angler Educators teach your kids the finer points of reeling in the big one at My First Fish. Children (5 and up) will learn how to prepare a rod, bait a hook, and how to cast. The fun happens at Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park at 9 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 19.

Escape the heat with a dip in an indoor pool. There are probably plenty of neighborhood pools around where you live, but c’mon people, it’s August for Pete’s sake! I’m betting they’re less than refreshing about now. The City of Denton has a great indoor pool that’s part of its Water Works complex. In addition to plenty of room to swim and places to sit, the pool also has two diving boards (a rarity these days) and a pretty cool slide.

We’ve all heard that money doesn’t grow on trees, but I bet you didn’t know that it is made in Fort Worth. Take a tour of the money factory, a.k.a. the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Western Currency Facility, where kids can see money being printed from an enclosed walkway above the production floor.  In addition to the tour, there are two floors of interactive exhibits and displays showcasing currency history and the art of currency manufacturing. Reservations are not required; the tours are self-guided and on a first come, first serve basis.  The tour is approximately 45 minutes along an elevated walkway. One last thing, before the tour you should allow 30 minutes to clear WCF security.
