The music director of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra is leaving that job after nearly two decades at the podium.

The symphony announced that Miguel Harth-Bedoya will step aside to become “conductor laureate” in Forth Worth after the 2020 season ends.

It’s the second major departure in the North Texas classical-music scene — Jaap Van Zweden  is leaving the Dallas Symphony Orchestra to take over the New York Philharmonic this fall.

The orchestra is beginning a search for a replacement.

Harth-Bedoya joined the orchestra in 2000. He has commissioned -or co- commissioned – works by Osvaldo Golijov, Kevin Puts, Antonio Juan Marcos, and Victor Agudelo. In addition, he has programmed works by Jennifer Higdon, Gabriela Lena Frank, Mason Bates, Behzad Ranjbaran, Anna Clyne, Adam Schoenberg, and Andrew Norman, among others. During his tenure, the FWSO has released 13 recordings.
