Welcome to sprummer! That weird transitional time of the year between spring and summer when you can’t decide if you need a sweater and the kids go a little bit bonkers waiting for the last few weeks of school to be over.

To parents and educators, sprummer is very much like the final days leading up to Christmas where the little kiddles are so full of anticipation they bounce off the walls like tiny caffeinated superballs. Any attempt to get them to focus is just a sad, sad waste of time. It seems as though there’s no better time than the present for a distraction. Gather up your mini balls of energy and head out to one of these sprummertime diversions.

Get preview summer while you’re taking in all glory of springtime at the Wildflower! Arts & Music Festival. Besides the impressive lineup of music for the adults (The B-52s, The All American Rejects, and Bowling for Soup to name a few), there’s also a WF! Kids area, where little rockers can hang out and enjoy entertainment geared just for them. Highlights include Rock Star Karaoke, a student art contest, and a live butterfly habitat featuring over 250 native Texas butterflies. The fun happens this weekend in Richardson’s Galatyn Park.

Music under the stars is always a great way to ring in summer. A great place to listen to some tunes al fresco is Levitt Pavilion in Arlington. You can bring in a picnic dinner and listen to a FREE concert on their great big open lawn. This weekend catch 70s & 80s soft rock band Amrosia on Saturday and country musician Bleu Edmondson on Sunday.

In addition to the traditional contest, the nice folks at Good Local Markets are inviting the kids into the contest with a competition for the best youth bakers 16 and under. Winners will be selected in the categories of Fruit, Nut, Chocolate, Cream/Custard and Best Overall. The entry fee is $10 per pie and (lucky you) all the pies are available for tasting for $5.

You can celebrate the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees at Plano Symphony Orchestra’s Bugs, Flowers, and Bees Family Concert. The concert starts at 3 p.m. where the Plano Symphony will play “Flight of the Bumblebee,” “Spring” from “The Four Seasons.”  To make this concert extra special, marionettes from Le Theatre de Marionette of Geppetto’s Marionette Theater will dance and perform to the music. Be sure to come early because starting at 2:15 p.m. the lobby will be open with coloring and crafts, and an instrument petting zoo. You can catch this sprummer concert this Sunday at McKinney Performing Arts Center.
