CTA TBD

Finding summer camps for the kiddos is a popular topic–we know because we covered it  last week! This is definitely a subject worth repeating, so here’s part deux of our fabulous camps picks. To make it super easy-peezy for you, the camps are sorted into categories.

Art
Did someone say popular? The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is bringing back their very popular Summer Art Camp for kids ages 4 to 13. Kids will learn about art with activities centered around the museum’s permanent collection and current exhibitions. This year’s camps will focus heavily on the Modern’s special exhibition Frank Stella: A Retrospective. Kids are grouped by age and led by area artists who will offer their unique perspectives. The last day of camp ends with a reception and display of the campers’ artwork to celebrate their creative accomplishments with family and friends.

Does your kid love watching YouTube and making short films with your iPhone? If the answer is yes, then point your budding Fellini towards the Writer’s Garret for their Video Camp. Kids ages 10-16 will be immersed into the world of film-making in this 5-day camp that includes collaboration in writing story boarding, casting, and editing. At the end of the camp the indi-filmmakers leave with a film created by the team.

Speaking of iPhones, a lot of kids don’t realize before digital photography people took pictures with actual cameras–not phones; and film, paper, chemicals and darkrooms were required to make a photo. Dallas Center for Photography‘s Summer Photo Camps will teach your little shutterbugs how create photos hands-on, the old school way using materials and techniques that have been used to make photographs for over 150 years. The 5-day camps are offered in three sessions for kids going into grades 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12.

Not to sound like an old person or anything, but the DC Teens: Street Art Camp  at the Dallas Contemporary really is too cool for school. Campers ages 13-17 can explore their creativity while being guided by professional street artists. They will also be able to try various techniques and materials while learning about famous street artists from around the world. And just in case you were wondering, participants are encouraged to create artwork via responsible and legal methods only.

Theater and Dance

Theater kids rejoice! The Dallas Theater Center‘s three-week SummerStage Musical Theater Intensive Camp is back! Under the direction of the one and only Jeremy Allen Dumont, students will receive rigorous dance, voice and actor training, culminating in a final musical theater showcase. The camp is for kids ages 13 to 18 and starts the week of June 6, so don’t wait to sign up.

If three weeks isn’t enough, check out the Summer Theater Camp at the Bishop Arts Theatre Center in Oak Cliff. Beginning June 6, TeCo Theatrical Productions, Inc. will offer an eight-week summer theater camp to kids 6 to 12 years old.  In addition to learning the ropes on all the usual theater stuff like music, song, and dance; campers will also learn auditioning skills and how to prepare a professional resume.

Get your kiddo pumped about the piano this summer at a Beginning Piano Camp at Parker Piano Studios.  The 5-day camp is designed for kids ages 5-7 with no prior piano experience. Campers will learn key names, notes values, fun chants, beginning pieces and will actually be excited as they learn the piano in a fun, energetic group environment.  The camp starts Monday, June 6 and is from 9 to 11 a.m.

Science and Nature

Calling all LEGO Masters, robotics enthusiasts and STEM kids! The Brain Club‘s LEGO Engineering & Robotics Summer Camp for kids 8-12 years old is tailor made for you! In this fun 4-day/8-hour summer camp, kids not only learn how to build exciting introductory level robots and engineering concepts using LEGO model building, they’ll also learn computer-programming basics. All LEGO construction kits, building material and instructions are provided. Class size is small and there are plenty session options available in June, July and August.

Kids can go wild this summer at the Bob Jones Nature Center. Campers can explore everything from tiny macro invertebrates in a pond, to bobcats in the brush, and learn how wildlife and humans are connected. Highlights include, experiments, guided hikes,  art in nature, and weekly visits from special guests like the Ft. Worth Nature Center and Rapture Centers and Dinosaur Valley State Park Ranger. The 4-day camps run Tuesday through Friday from June 7 to August 12 and are for kids 5 to 9. You can sign up for one week or for the whole summer. There’s also a 1/2 day camp available for 3-4 year-olds.

Campers from pre-K to 8th grade are going to love getting their hands dirty at the Texas Discovery Gardens 2016 Summer Camps. They’ll make wildlife friends, dig into gardening, and create crafts, bird houses, and more. The 5-day camps feature a different theme each week and  run from June 13 to August 15.  Kids in the 4th and 5th grade won’t want to miss From the Land to Sea with the Children’s Aquarium Camp that happens the week of July 18. They’ll spend 3 days at the Texas Discovery Gardens learning about all the creatures that live in the gardens, and then spend 2 days at the Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park exploring the underwater world. Best of all, this camp includes a sleepover on Thursday night at the aquarium.
