Art&Seek Jr. is one mom‘s quest to find activities to end the seemingly endless chorus of the “I’m Bored Blues” while having fun herself.  Impossible you say? Check back on Tuesdays for kid-friendly events that are fun for adults, too.

October is winding down which means it’s just about time to pack up the Jack-O-Lanterns, skeletons, and witches in moth balls for another year. But for all you lovers of the big orange and black holiday there’s still time to sneak some more scary fun before we say “au revoir” to the spookiest time of the year.

Halloween night can be a dilemma for older kids.  They’re too old for treat-or-treating and too young for The Walking Dead. What to do with your babies who fall into that awkward age? Here’s what: treat them to Night of Living Dead at Dallas Children’s Theater Halloween night. The flesh-eating zombies from the 1968 cult classic are brought to life (well, sort of) by DCT’s Teen Scene Players. It’s kooky, dark, satirical fun, but keep in mind, this show is intense and is best for kids 13 and up. There’s only one performance left and it’s on Halloween night, so get your tickets early. This THRILLER is gonna sell out.

If you really feel like kickin’ it old school on Halloween night, don’t miss a free screening of The Creature From the Black Lagoon at Garland’s Plaza Theater. Another cult classic– this time from 1954– the film is what we use to call a “Monster Movie,” when I was a kid. But don’t worry, it’s goofy scary and tame enough for your little monsters. Be sure to wear your costumes, there will be a costume contest with prizes for winners in both the adult and kids categories.

It wouldn’t be Halloween with a spooky story or two. Head to the  Bath House Cultural Center at White Rock Lake on Saturday afternoon for Ghost Tales at the Bath House. Kids can gather round as storytellers from the Dallas Storytellers Guild tell tales guaranteed to send a shiver up your spine.

Halloween might be over October 31, but November 1 brings  Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. Celebrate this holiday that’s both rich in tradition and fun at Artes de la Rosa’s 11th annual Dia de los Muertos celebration. It’s happening in Fort Worth on Saturday night from 7 to 10 p.m. There will be music, dancing, face painting and, of course, pan de muerto! The highlight of the evening is the drum and puppet procession from Marine Park to the Rose Marine Theater Plaza.

Close out the weekend at Los Muertos Bishop, a Dia de los Muertos celebration that takes place in the Bishops Arts district of Oak Cliff on Sunday afternoon. There will Aztec dancers, local art, music and street food. And speaking of food, bring canned goods for the Day of the Dead “altar.” The donations will go to the North Texas Food Bank.
