Art Con 9 is coming this weekend. In the run up to the big event on Saturday, the team is helping us introduce some of the participating Conspirators. Thanks to Martha Belden, for telling us more about today’s artist,  Michael Broussard

Michael Broussard

Michael Broussard finds inspiration everywhere… in light shining through trees, the way hair moves when you run a comb through it, concrete sidewalks jutting out from brick walls. Then he manipulates metal to recreate the light and textures he sees and experiences as he observes the world. Since he was a child, Michael has been fascinated. He tinkers with things… tries to figure out how and why they work. And this lifelong fascination led him naturally to pursue careers involving creation. He’s worked in construction, in interior design and as a hair stylist for 15 years. Then three years ago, he decided to drop everything else and dedicate his life to fine art. Since that time, he has made metalworking his full-time profession and hobby with Atomic Twelve Designs.

Learning how best to play with and manipulate light and texture in his metalwork has become a passion. He’s a mad scientist playing with metal and chemicals and fire and tools until he figures out how to bring the shapes, patterns and designs he imagines to life. Discerning how to transform light in particular with his creations mesmerizes him and inspires him to try new things every day.

Michael was introduced to Art Con through a friend and attended the event for the first time last year. When his name was drawn this year, he eagerly accepted the challenge do something he’s never done before. Traditionally working on large-scale designs, he’s excited to showcase a much smaller piece for Art Con and prove both to himself and his audience what he can do with layering and building outward while remaining within the smaller dimensions. Seeing everyone working so hard and making art simultaneously (although, due to the noise involved with his process, he was mostly confined to working in what he fondly dubbed “the murder room”) for a great cause is what makes Art Con so appealing for Michael, and he can’t wait to meet new people and share what he’s created.
