Her piece: “Labor and Commerce”

Michele Jaquis’ new video “Labor and Commerce” is a montage of a surreal but sustainable labor practice in which goats clear an urban hillside, mixed with the sounds of city markets, recommendations for raising goats, and recollections from farm workers. The piece was born out of her fascination of witnessing the multiplicities of people, animals, vehicles, buildings all inhabiting, working and contributing to the life and economy of the city in the context of the sustainability and labor rights movements.

Bio: Michele Jaquis is a socially engaged artist and educator based in Los Angeles, where she is Assistant Professor and Founding Director of Interdisciplinary Studies at Otis College of Art and Design. Her work examines the complexities within personal relationships, identity, language and communication. As a PALS Fellow, representing Otis in the Partnership for Academic Leadership in Sustainability, she also has a growing interest in the social and environmental responsibility of artists and designers. Michele’s videos, installations, performances and photo/text-based work have been presented at conferences, film and video festivals, galleries, museums, and alternative spaces across the U.S. and in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. She holds an MFA in sculpture from RISD and a BFA in sculpture/experimental studio with a minor in psychology from Hartford Art School, Univ. of Hartford.
