It’s a very special New York Times kind of round-up today.
First up: Hallie Foote performs a scene from The Old Friends for the Times‘ “In Performance” video series. The play is by her late father, Texas playwright Horton Foote, and will be performed for the first time at the Signature Theater. It opens Thursday.
Next, the New York City Opera may have to cancel the rest of its season if it can’t raise $20 million by the end of the year. “We’ve had balanced budgets for the last two years, and we’ve been doing, I think, incredible work onstage,” says George Steel, the company’s managing director and artistic director. “But we can’t forge ahead without a significant infusion of capital.” Steel, you may recall, had a very brief tenure at the Dallas Opera before absconding for New York.
Finally, former Dallasite Terence Nance has been named one of “20 Young Directors to Watch.” The 31-year-old, who now lives in Brooklyn, was cited for his first feature, “An Oversimplification of Her Beauty.”
