Drumming up support: Remember the ice storm of 2011? Super Bowl partiers weren’t the only ones inconvenienced by it. Among the cancellations: two performances of a new work called Gamelan D’Drum. The piece was commissioned by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and created by local  percussion group D’Drum, with Stewart Copeland of the Police. (KERA’s Bill Zeeble  told us all about it.) But the collaborators were able put on one debut performance during that frigid week at the Meyerson Symphony Center. And it was captured on film. So was the 3-year process to create the piece. Now D’Drum has launched a Kickstarter campaign to try to raise the money needed to finish up the doc.  Thank you gifts include autographed drum sticks (for a $125 donation) and opportunities to jam with Copeland at his private studio ($10,000. Better hurry. One of three has already been snapped up.)

Texas treasure: James Magee has spent more than 30 years building a massive installation called The Hill in the scrubby desert east of El Paso. For most of that time, he deflected any glare of attention. That changed a bit in 2010,   when The Nasher Sculpture Center held a retrospective of his work, and, in conjunction,  James Magee: The Hill, an assessment of the complex by arts professor Richard Brettell, was published.  Magee uncharacteristically made the media rounds, and Jerome Weeks’ interview with him remains one of my favorite Art&Seek pieces.  Magee is back in town tonight, for a show of his work at Kirk Hopper Fine Art, including drawings and studies he made as he worked through his plans for The Hill.

Art Walk: It’s the first big fall weekend of gallery shows.  In Fort Worth,  Fall Gallery Night is Saturday, and Gaile Robinson’s wrap up at DFW,com will make you want to go. Among the openings is a notable closing – Moving Pictures, work by video artists, will be the last show at brand 10’s current location. Meanwhile, Peter Simek at Front Row lays out  options in Dallas this weekend.
