BY THE LETTER: In Churchmouse Productions’ Hate Mail, a rich guy and a starving female artist meet cute through a series of letters exchanged over a souvenir he bought that she won’t take back. Angry letters lead to insight into each others lives, which, of course, leads to much more. So does this gimmicky set up pay off? “It’s as nutty, and as winning, as all those old movies starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant — only with darker undertones and naughtier language,” Lawson Taitte writes on dallasnews.com. “It is Dallas theater’s best summer surprise.” Martha Heimberg also enjoyed it. “The verbal play and sardonic insult at the outset get the most laughs—and the letter form works perfectly for such repartee,” she writes on theaterjones.com. Catch it at Bath House Cultural Center through Aug. 17.

STICK TO THE SCRIPT: On Saturday, Casa Mañana opens its production of Miss Saigon. It’s a show that’s known for its special effects, particularly the dramatic helicopter entrance. But the show’s director, Tim Bennett, says his version is less focused on those showier elements and more concerned with the words and music. “I hope that people don’t come in and say, ‘Gosh, I can’t wait to see the helicopter.’ Because there’s a much bigger show here,” he tells dfw.com. “I want to be sure that story is told. We have been talking a lot about how we can build that moment. We know how we are going to do it. But I don’t want to give anything away.”
