HAVE A SEAT: The Dallas Museum of Art has acquired Miss Blanche, an armchair by Japanese designer Shiro Kuramata. And it’s already on view – in the “Form/Unformed: Design from 1960 to the Present” installation on Level 4. The acquisition was made in honor of outgoing DMA Board of Trustees Chairman Deedie Potter Rose. It’s rose-covered design was inspired by a corsage Vivien Leigh wore playing Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire.

REVISITING SUMMER CUT: On Friday, our buddies at KXT were, let’s say, concerned. The weather forecast wasn’t looking good for the second annual Summer Cut at Gexa on Saturday. But for the most part, we all caught a break, save for a short downpour between Grace Potter’s set and the night’s headliners, The Avett Brothers. And so the station got some nice write-ups from the locals. “Like last year’s Summer Cut, Saturday’s two-stage festival served up a smart blend of national and local acts,” Thor Christensen writes on dallasnews.com. “As the Denton garage rock duo RTB2 played its soulful ‘Letters to a Young Danny Kennedy,’ it was a reminder that a great local song is far more interesting than the 10,000th spin of some moldy oldie.” Preston Jones had a good time as well. “On a concert calendar suddenly festooned with festivals in every corner of North Texas, KXT’s Summer Cut continues to be a welcome, mostly low-key entry, ideal for easing into yet another sure-to-be-scorching summer spent with good friends and great music.” he writes on dfw.com, where you can also see a slideshow from the day.

JAAP IN CHICAGO: Dallas Symphony Orchestra music director Jaap van Zweden was in Chicago over the weekend for a guest conducting gig with the Chicago Symphony. And out neighbors to the north definitely made him feel welcome. “Jaap van Zweden’s progression from pinch-hitter to honored guest to esteemed member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s extended family has been one of the most encouraging developments Chicago music has seen in years,” John von Rhein writes at the top of his Chicago Tribune review. Van Zweden’s already booked in Chicago for a concert next year focusing on the music of Britten, Prokofiev and Shostakovich.
