Art&Seek Jr. is one mom‘s quest to find activities to end the seemingly endless chorus of the “I’m Bored Blues” while having fun herself. Impossible you say? Check back on Tuesdays for kid-friendly events that are fun for adults, too.
One of my favorite Mother’s Day stories was actually told to me by my own mom as she recounted one of her more memorable Mother’s Days.
It was early in the morning – so early that it was dark outside and everyone in the house was still sound asleep. My brother, who was probably around 4 at the time, tip-toed into my parent’s room. He crept up to my mom’s side of the bed and whispered in his sweet baby voice, “Happy Mother’s Day, Mama. I made you some chocolate milk. I accidentally dropped the can of chocolate syrup when I was making it, but don’t worry. I swept it all up.” My mother said she went from dead asleep to wide awake in an instant.
I love this story for a couple of reasons. One, if you have kids, I guarantee you have your own version of this tale (switch out the chocolate syrup for the cat and tile sealant and you have mine). And two, the more outlandish the story, the funnier it will be when you think about it later or retell it to your relatives during Thanksgiving dinner.
Hopefully your Mother’s Day will be chocolate syrup free but still full of giggly, silly moments. Here are a few events that can help with the memory making:
Besides memories, you can also create a pretty present for mom on Saturday at Vetro Glassblowing Studio’s Traditional Mother’s Day Experience. Kids can choose to make either a glass flower or flared bowl that mom will treasure forever. Reservations are not required – first come, first served. Families and friends are encouraged to come watch and take photos in the stadium seating area of the studio. One last thing – your present that you make on Saturday won’t be ready to pick up until Tuesday. I’m sure mom will understand.
Love art? Love animals? Well then the Paw Prints Art Show this weekend at the Dallas Zoo should be right up your alley. You and the kiddos can enjoy the fine art, including paintings, sculpture, ceramics, wood carvings, photography and hand-crafted jewelry. And, of course, you can take a stroll around the zoo. In addition to fine art, there will also be paintings on display created by your animal friends at the Dallas Zoo. You can feel good about buying these one-of-a-kind originals, because proceeds from the sale of animal art will benefit the zoo’s conservation programs.
Take mom to see the “Tough by Nature: Portraits of Cowgirls and Ranch Women of the American West” exhibit at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame on Sunday. The exhibit showcases 65 of artist Lynda Lanker’s drawings, paintings, works on paper and prints. Her work captures the spirit and dispels stereotypes of these unique women. Bonus! Visit the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame on Mother’s Day and your mom gets free admission! Also, send a photo of your mom, or a woman in your life, to [email protected], and tell the nice folks at the museum how she made a difference and they will share your photo on their Facebook page. The photo with the most “likes” by Mother’s Day will win a gift basket from the Cowgirl Shop.
Happy Mother’s Day, y’all!
