Shen Wei Dance Arts

TITAS will present a remarkable array of international musical talent and genre-defining dance companies next season, including Pilobolus, chamber music with Philip Glass, the Mark Morris Dance Group and Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo.

Lesser-known but innovative attractions include the Dallas debuts of SCRAP-ARTS-MUSIC (featured in the closing ceremonies of the 2010 Olympics), Shen Wei Dance Arts (Chinese-born choreographer Shen Wei himself was a Meadows Prize winner at SMU last year) and the English performance-art-dance company, Motionhouse.

The most exciting new contemporary ballet company touring today. Luscious choreography and beautifully gifted, seasoned dancers are what make this remarkable new company so special. JLD’s goal is to perform dance works associated with music, opera, mixed media compositions delivering an organic blend of classical and contemporary styles. This performance will feature their collaboration with visual artist Shinichi Maruyama, composer Jakub Ciupinski and Vancouver-based design firm, Molo. In association with this presentation, The Crow Collection of Asian Art will host an exhibition of Maruyama’s artwork and a salon conversation with the artists.

SCRAP•ARTS•MUSIC’s performances are a spectacular and intoxicating mix of music and movement that transcends language, culture and age – great for the entire family. With hand-crafted instruments using found materials such as accordion parts, aluminum scraps and even artillery shells, composer-percussionist Gregory Kozak and designer-muse Justine Murdy take musical invention, recycling and environmental consciousness to new heights. Their “upcycled” creations transform into over 100 unique mobile sculptures capable of fresh and exhilarating music. Exciting and mesmerizing, three billion viewers watched them world-wide as they were featured at the Closing Ceremonies of the 2010 Olympics.

On a recent cultural trip to Israel, the TITAS Director became intrigued with the work of choreographer Rami Be’er and his company Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company. Beautifully crafted work, KCDC exemplifies the sophisticated work being created in Israel’s cultural scene. Be’er’s creations have brought the company much international acclaim making KCDC into one of Israel’s most prominent dance companies. Unique, innovative and highly stylized, KCDC has earned a reputation for sophisticated choreography with stunning dancers.

Always hilarious, and always a TITAS favorite – the Tocks are back! Founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts for the purpose of presenting a playful, entertaining view of traditional, classical ballet in parody form and en travesti, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo has established itself as a major dance phenomenon throughout the world. Their comedy is achieved by incorporating and exaggerating the foibles, accidents, and underlying incongruities of serious dance. The fact that men dance all the parts – heavy bodies delicately balancing on toes as swans, sylphs, water sprites, romantic princesses, or angst-ridden Victorian ladies – enhances, rather than mocks, the spirit of dance as an art form, delighting and amusing the most knowledgeable, as well as the novices in the audiences.

Mark Morris is an influential and celebrated choreographer whose once-controversial pieces have become the standard of creativity for a new generation of dancers, choreographers and critics. Internationally recognized for the breadth and scope of his artistic vision, Shen Wei is a prolific choreographer and stage director; set, costume, lighting and make-up designer; painter; and filmmaker. He is perhaps best known as the lead choreographer for the Opening Ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which won worldwide acclaim. The New York Times proclaimed, “If there is something to write home about in the dance world, it is the startlingly imaginative work of the Chinese born choreographer Shen Wei.” This amazing performance is in collaboration with an exhibition and salon discussion hosted by the Crow Collection of Asian Art.
