‘TIS THE SEASON: The Rite of Spring is getting quite a workout on area stages this year as companies celebrate its 100th birthday. The Joffrey Ballet brought its version through town in January. And this weekend you’ve got two chances to see the blockbuster combo of Stravinsky’s score and Nijinsky’s choreography. Paul Taylor Dance Company brings its staging to the Eisemann Center on Saturday. And SMU will feature the work in its Spring Dance Concert on Friday and Saturday. Dutch choreographer Joost Vrouenraets is handling the movements. And he tells dallasnews.com that he finds ideas from YouTube, comic books and other places. “I don’t want to be a purist,” he says. “I want to be a purist in my vision, but my vision is eclecticism. Everything I have in my luggage, I use.”
MUSIC BITS: Fort Worth singer-songwriter Phil Hamilton talks about his decision to quit his day job and live life as a touring musician. (fwweekly.com) … Fort Worth rapper Wrex Washington talks about the process of finding his voice and point-of-view for his new album, The Wrex Files. (dfw.com) … And Richard Thompson talks about his new album, Electric, and previews his show Saturday at the Granada. (DC9 at Night)
QUOTABLE: “My wife is a singer. I always left my working score lying out so that I could come right back to it. When I went to university to teach, I would come back and find little notes on the score. ‘Too High. Where does she breathe? Too low.’ I had a ghost helping me write.”
– Opera composer Dominick Argento, in an interview with theaterjones.com. Argento’s The Aspern Papers will be performed this weekend by The Dallas Opera, the company that premiered the work 25 years ago.
